Worldwide virus deaths top 256,000

ISLAMABAD: The global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic topped a quarter of a million on Tuesday, with the US government predicting a further surge in fatalities as an international vaccine drive garnered $8 billion in pledges.

The dire forecast from the United States came as much of the Western world emerged from weeks of lockdown, with hopes that the disease may have peaked in Europe after nearly two months of confinement.

Financial markets saw a light at the end of a tunnel as businesses in Europe and the United States tentatively reopened, and stocks and oil prices rallied Tuesday, international media reported.

But the global progress did little to cool a war of words between the US and China -- fuelled by American claims the virus originated in a Chinese laboratory, a theory the World Health Organisation (WHO) labelled "speculative."

Since the disease first surfaced in China late last year the number of confirmed cases has crossed 3.7 million while fatalities have topped 256,000.

Europe remains the hardest-hit continent with around 144,000 deaths while the US has recorded over 71,300, the biggest single-country toll.

The United Kingdom has overtaken Italy to report the highest official death toll from the new coronavirus in Europe, figures released on Tuesday showed, increasing pressure on Prime Minister Boris Johnson over his response to the crisis.

Weekly figures from Britain’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) added more than 7,000 deaths in England and Wales in the week to April 24, raising the total for the United Kingdom to 32,313.

Only the United States, with a population nearly five times greater, has suffered more confirmed fatalities from the virus than Britain, according to the data so far.

Tuesday’s figures are based on death certificate mentions of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, including suspected cases.

While different ways of counting make comparisons with other countries difficult, the figure confirmed Britain was among those hit worst by a pandemic.

The bleak figures were compounded Monday by an internal government estimate in Washington that forecast the COVID-19 infection rate in the US could surge eight-fold to 200,000 a day by June 1, and the daily death toll could rise to 3,000.

And Russia has emerged as a new coronavirus hotspot. It is now the European country reporting the highest number of new infections, with a total of over 155,000 cases.

The lockdown has however had one worrying impact -- reported cases of domestic violence in Russia have more than doubled. Elsewhere in Europe, Germany´s biggest state Bavaria said it would allow restaurants to open from mid-May, with pressure growing on Chancellor Angela Merkel to ease stay-at-home measures that have plunged the economy into a deep recession.

As the race is on to find a way to stamp out the virus, a special telethon backed by the WHO but snubbed by Washington pulled in $8.1 billion to support international efforts to develop a vaccine.

"This was a powerful and inspiring demonstration of global solidarity," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Seeming to defend its non-participation, the State Department insisted the United States is "leading" the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and said it has spent more than $1 billion together with US drug companies to work on a vaccine.

"Everything about the step-wise evolution over time strongly indicates that (this virus) evolved in nature and then jumped species," he said.

US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that deaths will go beyond his earlier prediction of 60,000, saying: "We´re going to lose anywhere from 75, 80 to 100,000 people."

His estimate underscored the tough, politically-tinged debate over reopening, which pits concerns about a rising death toll against the need to restore national economies shattered by prolonged shutdowns.

Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in Asia rose to a quarter of a million on Tuesday, according to international media reports, driven by outbreaks in Singapore, Pakistan and India, even as China, South Korea and Japan significantly slowed the spread of the disease.

The region where the COVID-19 pandemic started has fared better overall than North America and Europe since the first case was reported in Wuhan, China on Jan. 10.

It has taken Asia almost four months to reach the 250,000 infection milestone, a level that Spain alone is approaching just a little over two months since reporting its first case.

At 250,650, Asia now accounts for just 7 percent of global cases, compared with 40 percent for Europe and 34 percent for North America, although experts worry that unreported infections are masking the true extent of the pandemic.

Infection may cause only mild symptoms and not everyone with symptoms is tested, while most countries only record hospital deaths, meaning deaths in private homes and nursing homes have not yet been included.

Iran on Tuesday announced that confirmed coronavirus infections had reached almost 100,000 in the country as fresh cases picked up again after a brief drop in recent days.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed plans to gradually reopen schools next week amid concerns from mayors, teachers and parents about the timing.

More than 300 mayors in the capital region, including Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, urged Macron in an open letter to delay the reopening of primary schools scheduled for next week.

The majority of French children attend public schools. Many parents say they won’t send their children back to school as France is one of the world’s hardest-hit countries by the coronavirus.

India’s federal health ministry Tuesday said 179 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 3,597 positive cases, were reported since Monday evening in the country, taking the number of deaths to 1,568 and total cases to 46,433.

The head of public health authority RKI said on Tuesday the reproduction rate for the coronavirus pandemic in Germany is currently estimated at 0.71.

That number indicates that 100 infected people infect on average 71 others, meaning the number of new infections would fall over time.

Best Laptop for World of Warcraft

It doesn’t matter if you side with the Horde or with the Alliance, you just have to admit that WoW is one of the most insanely rich, and awe inspiring platform on the internet. Epic battles, epic gear, epic battle sequences and an epic lore are the hallmarks of the series. What got me hooked to this gem was the cinematic trailer for Wrath of the Lich King. Arthas sounds so cool in that short, but fabulously animated clip.

My son, the day you were born…the very forests of Lordearon whispered the name ‘Arthas’!
And a few seconds later: I watched with pride as you grew into a weapon.

Narrated, just as Arthas is unsheathing his sword. Rarely have I encountered something so epic. (Apart from Lord of the Rings in the fantasy genre, maybe).
Well, getting back to the point, what is the best laptop for jumping into the realms of Azeroth, Kalimdor or Pandaria and joining in (with or against) the likes of Thrall, Varok Saurfang, Sylvanas Windrunner etc.
There isn’t a go-to computer of any sorts that is required. A basic machine with 4 GB RAM and a disk space of 70 GB should suffice for the latest ‘Battle for Azeroth’ expansion pack. These are the minimum requirements that need to be met. Make sure you have a good broadband connection with strong signal. That’s pretty much it. Anything else you install or wanna improve will definitely enhance the user experience.
So, here’s a list of some of the best laptop computers for gaming that should be an upgrade on the minimum requirements.

1.       Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop PC

Like mentioned before, this isn’t necessarily a laptop for WoW. This is a high performance laptop for high demand labels like Horizon Zero Dawn. The effect of this laptop will be to throw the device lag out of the window. The internet lag might prevail for a bit, until you get a better connection, or relocate the router for maximum strength signals.
The performance on this thing immense. Packed with an Intel Core 9th Gen i7 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Graphics with 6GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM, the price to performance is yet to beat. This laptop is dedicated to reducing the troubles of hardcore gamers.
300 nits on the screen with a size of 15.6” is pretty good. The keyboard is good (backlit and all) except that the keys are a bit too shallow and there’s too much light bleed. The screen refresh rate is tremendous as well, resulting in amazing fps. The laptop is lightweight albeit the fact that its top is metal. Overall a good unit to have.
Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • Unmatched performance
  • Great RAM and CPU with options for upgrade

Cons:
  • Fans are very loud, with limited speed options. Fair to say that, a 17” model would have worked in a better heat dissipation.
  • Too much light bleed might be a trouble for some gamers, who prefer the dark.
  • Numerous customers have reported screen blackouts after minimal usage, but have praised the working.

2.       Dell Inspiron 15 7567 Laptop

This is one of the more affordable laptops on this list. It is fitted with 7th Generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ Quad Core 2.50 GHz, 8GB 2400MHz DDR4 RAM, 256GB Solid State Drive and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. All this makes it a fairly compatible choice for gamers. It will offer somewhere between 40-60 fps in medium detail for most games, which is good. The speakers aren’t half bad either.
The entire system is extremely manageable, and you can install any upgrades, or administer any modifications of your liking within minutes. The battery life is good. Not extraordinary, but decent enough. The keyboard nice and backlit. The touch pad is a bit rigid to feel, but does the job quite well.
The down sides though, are that, the edges aren’t exactly rounded which might be a trouble for users while in bed, or placing the laptop on their laps. The interface isn’t Linux friendly. Various customers have complained of the sudden drops in frame rates and irresponsiveness of the unit. Some have complained of dead or weak batteries after use of around 6-months.
Pros:
  • Relatively cheap
  • Allows average performance seamlessly
  • Keyboard and speakers are good

Cons:
  • Not exactly an ergonomic design
  • Seems like Dell’s quality control is mediocre at best

3.       Asus FX504 Thin & Light TUF Gaming Laptop

Calling it a dedicated gaming laptop would definitely be over the top exaggeration, and it seems like ASUS have done something exactly along these lines.
Considering the fact that it only has 256 GB of SSD to offer, it can never suffice as a dedicated gaming computer. Though, if you are looking to run WoW, it should more than suffice. With WoW, there aren’t any high quality resolutions to display on scenic cinematics and a great amount of detail in the backgrounds. 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H Processor (Up to 3. 9GHz) and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB allow for a superior and flexible gaming performance and multitasking, more than any ordinary laptop would offer.
The laptop could do with a bit more venting, and tends to heat up on gaming marathons. Setup isn’t easy either, and if you aren’t tech savvy, it can be a proper handful. There are updates that need installing and a few drivers to go along with all that.
Pros:
  • Decent enough price
  • Good for running retro games and WoW
  • Can be modified

Cons:
  • Not exactly a gaming laptop to be honest
  • Setup can be bit nerve wrecking

Verdict:
Beware of bogus sellers. Only buy from verified sellers.

Cheap Laptops that can run Fortnite

The world has been gripped in Fortnite fever for some time now. Despite the fact that the gameplay and the graphics are targeted at a rather young audience, the battle royale platform is equally popular with adults.
Hardcore Fortnite players (for example Ninja, Pewds who have earned in game collectables) aside, even celebs have been playing it, thus adding to its worldwide appeal. Antoine Griezman (Barcelona striker and World Cup Winner with the French football team) is famous for copying Fortnite dances as his goal celebrations.
Regardless of all this, the question on our hands is, what is an affordable laptop that is good for playing Fortnite?
The system requirements for the game are minimal, which is probably the biggest reason for its popularity and wide appeal. A basic machine should be able to run it without many problems. But if you want to truly eliminate device lag (caused by choked ram, overclocked/overused PC etc.) without spending much $$, I have compiled a list of suggestions that might help you. The best way of eliminating lag is to get a better Internet connection, and ensuring that the signal strength is excellent. If lag still persists, then you can consider upgrading your device.

1        ASUS TUF Thin & Light Gaming Laptop PC

Asus are one of the more reliable brands in the market. I have been an ASUS customer myself, and was more than satisfied with their products.
This laptop is ideal for light-medium gaming. It will run most software as well without encountering much trouble. The keyboard is back-lit, which means gaming in the dark isn’t a problem. The specs are good enough to manage workload well enough. Battle life isn’t exactly ideal for gaming marathons, but at $700, four and a half hours of battery life should suffice. The fan isn’t extremely loud either. The entire unit is extremely lightweight and yet durable.
There are a few shortcomings though. The computer is prone to crashes and blue screens with numerous customers reporting the problem. Despite featuring an SSD, the drive is bit too slow for some routine tasks. Personally, I don’t really like the red theme carried out throughout the unit. There is too much light bleed from the keyboard, which proves to be a proper nuisance. Setup isn’t very easy either.
Pros:

  • Lightweight and thin
  • Back lit
  • Handsome battery life
  • Quiet fans
Cons:

  • Light bleed
  • Prone to crashes
  • Slow on normal tasks.

2           Acer Aspire E 15 Laptop

Acer have been at the forefront of laptop manufacturing business. They enjoy a huge market share for obvious reasons.
The build on this laptop is amazing. The overall feel and the general shape is great. The keyboard looks and feels great. In short, there are a lot of things worth loving about this laptop.
The manufacturer claims a battery life of approx. 15 hours. A convenient compartment door has been installed to give access to the interior for upgrading RAM, hard drive etc. The keyboard is backlit. The touch pad has a silky feel about is as well. The specs should be able to handle regular tasks with relative ease, along with medium level games on higher settings. Not made for power usage though (20 tabs open on chrome, multiple programs running in the background).
The downside is, there is no setting option for the back light which goes off after some 30 seconds to preserve battery of course, but it can become a bit annoying after some time. The screen brightness isn’t great either at 200 nits. 270-280 nits is average, 300 is good for well lit environments. No wonder the battery life is insane.
Pros:

  • Can’t beat the value for money
  • Room for improvement provided
  • Backlit keyboard and great feel on the touchpad
Cons:

  • Not exceptionally bright
  • Some hardware issues have been reported to be full issues

3         LG gram Laptop - 15.6"

LG aren’t very renowned for making quality laptops, are they? Maybe it’s time to reconsider. The ‘gram’ is one of those laptops that I would love to own, but my financial health doesn’t allow me to spend that much $$.
This is one of the best high end, highly efficient, highly compatible laptop out there in the market. A 17” screen, with a terrific screen/body ratio, and a crisp resolution, weighing less than full 3 lb. When was the last time we heard of one of these!
The hardware on this thing is extraordinary for the amount of weight it carries. It performs majority tasks like a breeze and can handle sophisticated tasks without breaking a sweat. The 72Wh Lithium battery allows for an unprecedented 21.5 hours of battery life. This laptop comes in two variants as well. The 256 GB SSD, and the 8 GB DDR4 RAM. Windows 10 is pre-installed, which means setup will be a piece of cake.
The unit has withstood drop test from up to 4 feet high, thanks to its very flexible chassis and overall structure. (Mind you, the laptop will look a bit flimsy on first sight, but my guess is, LG deliberately intended it to be so in order to make to lighter).
The best thing about this is the keyboard. Not the very best in terms of key travel, and smoothness, but it features a num-pad. I mean, if you are an MS Excel person, you cannot ask for more. The keyboard is backlit, so that helps as well.
There aren’t any flaws that pop up immediately, but after some research I found that the screen is a bit too reflective. This means you’ll have to place the light source right in front of you. If it happens to be at the back, the screen will turn into a bloody mirror. The replacements in terms of hardware parts are expensive. Customer service isn’t a great deal help of either.
Pros:

  • Great all-round performance
  • Keyboard is great, albeit not too ergonomic
  • Great battery life (as advertised by the manufacturer)
Cons:

  • Reflective screen
  • Customer service ain't great
  • Reports of the machine breaking down, and replacements cost a lot
